Ajax are reportedly preparing a sensational move to appoint Xavi Hernández as their new head coach for the 2026/27 season, following the arrival of Jordi Cruyff as Sporting Director.

Xavi has been out of the dugout since his departure from Barcelona in May 2024. However, according to journalist Javi Miguel, the “Cruyff factor” has changed everything. With Fred Grim currently serving as interim manager until June, the Dutch giants are looking for a world-class figure to restore their dominance, and Xavi is the undisputed favorite.

The Architect of La Masia’s New Era

Internally, Ajax officials see Xavi as the ideal candidate to revitalize their famous youth academy. His track record at Barcelona speaks for itself:

  • Nurturing Talent: Xavi was responsible for the first-team integration of global stars like Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí.
  • Success on a Budget: Despite Barcelona’s financial struggles, he led them to a La Liga title (2022-23) and a Supercopa, laying the foundation for Hansi Flick’s current success.

Despite his complicated exit from the Camp Nou due to a strained relationship with Joan Laporta, Xavi’s numbers as a manager remain elite:

  • Al-Sadd: 65.9% win rate (7 titles).
  • Barcelona: 63.9% win rate (89 wins in 142 matches).

His tactical philosophy, centered on possession and positional play, aligns perfectly with the historical identity of Ajax. For a club that prides itself on “The Ajax Way,” Xavi is seen as the modern guardian of that legacy.

A New “Dream Team” in Amsterdam?

If the deal is finalized, Xavi would reunite with Jordi Cruyff, with whom he worked closely during his successful stint in Catalonia. With reports already linking players like Oleksandr Zinchenko to the club, Ajax appears to be building a project capable of competing once again at the highest level of the UEFA Champions League.
