Leon Goretzka’s eight-year tenure at Bayern Munich is rapidly reaching its conclusion, sparking a high-stakes transfer war between AC Milan and FC Barcelona.

With his current contract set to expire on June 30, 2026, Goretzka is officially free to negotiate a pre-contract with overseas clubs. While Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has utilized the midfielder this season, the club’s hierarchy has reportedly only offered a renewal on significantly reduced terms a move that has effectively paved the way for Goretzka’s departure.

Milan’s “Bargain” Strategy

According to renowned transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, AC Milan has already made enquiries to understand the financial parameters of a deal. Following the winter arrival of Niclas Füllkrug, the Rossoneri are keen to bolster their midfield without paying a premium transfer fee.

Milan’s plan is clear: secure a pre-contract agreement now to bring the 30-year-old German international to the San Siro as a free agent in July. However, they face stiff competition from within Italy, as Napoli and Juventus are also monitoring the situation closely.

The “Hansi Flick” Connection

Despite the interest from Serie A, the advantage currently lies with FC Barcelona. The primary catalyst is the long-standing bond between Goretzka and Barça manager Hansi Flick. The duo achieved historic success together in Bavaria, and reports suggest that Goretzka has “put all other offers on hold” while he awaits a formal proposal from the Catalan giants.

For Barcelona, Goretzka represents the perfect physical and experienced profile to balance their midfield, especially given the club’s ongoing financial constraints that make free transfers a priority.

Manchester United and the Premier League Shadow

While Spain and Italy lead the race, Manchester United remains a dark horse. The Red Devils are searching for immediate adjustments to their midfield, and the prospect of signing a player of Goretzka’s caliber for zero transfer fee is an opportunity the INEOS-led board finds hard to ignore.

As of today, the race remains open, but the January 2026 window is proving to be the decisive moment for Goretzka’s career. Will he reunite with Flick in La Liga, or will the allure of Milan’s new project prove too strong?
