Manchester United are edging closer to appointing a new interim manager following the departure of Ruben Amorim, and the race has intensified between two familiar faces at Old Trafford: Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

With the club navigating a difficult phase of the season, the priority is to secure short-term stability while a long-term managerial appointment is planned for the summer.

Solskjaer Initially Led the Race

At the start of the process, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was considered the frontrunner. The Norwegian, remembered fondly for his previous spell in charge beginning in 2018, held talks with club directors on Saturday.

During the meeting, Solskjaer presented a plan combining traditional Manchester United principles with updated tactical ideas. His strong relationship with supporters and familiarity with the club’s culture were seen as major advantages.

Carrick Gains Momentum With Board

However, Michael Carrick has emerged as a serious contender after impressing the board in a detailed interview held on Thursday. Carrick outlined a pragmatic and organized approach, focusing on tactical discipline and a balanced use of young talents and experienced players.

According to reports from The Guardian and ESPN, Carrick has now moved into a leading position in the race. Club officials were particularly struck by his clarity, calm demeanor, and understanding of the current squad’s needs.

Familiarity With the Club Seen as Key Advantage

Carrick’s background is viewed as a decisive factor. Having previously served as an assistant coach and enjoyed a long playing career at United, he knows the club’s internal dynamics and commands immediate respect in the dressing room.

United’s leadership believes this familiarity could help reduce tension and ensure smoother management during the transition period leading into the summer.

Solskjaer Remains a Strong Alternative

Despite Carrick’s rise, Solskjaer has not been ruled out. His experience as a head coach at the highest level remains highly valued, and he is considered the primary alternative should Carrick decline the offer or fail to deliver immediate results.

Both candidates are open to short-term contracts, with no guarantees beyond the interim period.

Decision Expected on Monday

Manchester United are expected to announce their interim manager on Monday morning, following a final internal meeting. The club wants the decision finalized quickly so the new coach can take charge of training this week.

Currently sitting seventh in the Premier League, United have struggled for consistency, and their recent FA Cup elimination has intensified the pressure. The interim manager’s main objectives will be to secure European qualification and restore calm at Old Trafford.

Long-Term Appointment Planned for Summer

Once the season concludes, the board plans to conduct a more thorough search for a permanent manager. Several candidates from outside England are already being monitored, but formal negotiations are expected to begin after June.
