NYON, Switzerland – The road to the Champions League final in Budapest is about to get intense. This Friday, January 30th, UEFA will host the highly anticipated draw for the knockout stages at its headquarters in Nyon.

Following the conclusion of the league phase, the “Elite Eight” have secured their direct spots in the Round of 16, while 16 other clubs must battle through a two-legged playoff to keep their European dreams alive.

Due to the final standings in the new league format, some of Europe’s biggest names find themselves in the unseeded playoff bracket. This setup creates the possibility of “final-quality” matchups much earlier than expected:

  • Real Madrid vs. Manchester City: A modern European classic. The head-to-head record is perfectly balanced with five wins each and five draws. They have faced off in every season since 2021/22, making this a potential “rematch of the century.”
  • Barcelona vs. PSG: A rivalry fueled by history and drama. From the famous “Remontada” to recent clashes, these two sides are no strangers to knockout intensity.

The “German Civil War” for Bayern?

Bayern Munich, having qualified directly for the Round of 16, could face a familiar domestic foe. The Bavarian giants might be drawn against Borussia Dortmund or Bayer Leverkusen, provided they advance from the playoffs. Bayern famously defeated Dortmund in the 2013 final and eliminated Leverkusen in last season’s knockout stage.
