The Champions League group stage reaches a thrilling climax this week with 18 simultaneous matches set to decide the fate of Europe’s elite. While Arsenal and Bayern Munich have secured their passage, several giants are still teetering on the edge of the playoff rounds.

According to a report by AS, the race for the direct Round of 16 spots (Top 8) is wide open. With only two clubs mathematically guaranteed a top-eight finish, the final 90 minutes will be a calculated gamble for the likes of Manchester City, Barcelona, and Inter Milan.

The “Safe” Zone: Arsenal and Bayern Leading the Way

Only two teams enter the final round with their tickets to the Round of 16 already punched:

  • Arsenal (21 pts): Currently leading the table and favorites to finish as the #1 overall seed.
  • Bayern Munich (18 pts): Secured in the Top 8, but needing a heavy win against PSV and an Arsenal slip-up—to claim the top spot.

One Point Away: Real Madrid and Liverpool

Both Real Madrid and Liverpool sit on 15 points. For them, the mission is simple: avoid defeat. A draw in their respective matches guarantees a top-eight finish. However, a loss could see them tumble into the high-stakes playoff round (9th to 24th place).

Perhaps the most chaotic scenario involves seven clubs tied on 13 points. None of these teams currently control their own destiny for a direct Round of 16 spot:

  1. Manchester City
  2. Barcelona
  3. Inter Milan
  4. PSG
  5. Chelsea
  6. Newcastle United
  7. Atlético Madrid

All seven are guaranteed at least a playoff spot, but they will be desperately checking other scores to see if they can break into the elite Top 8.

On the Brink: Athletic Bilbao’s Last Stand

Further down the table, Athletic Bilbao (8 pts) faces a “win or go home” scenario. They must secure a victory and hope for a significant goal-difference swing to remain in European competition.

The Eliminated

For Villarreal, Kairat Almaty, Slavia Prague, and Eintracht Frankfurt, the journey ends here. These four clubs are mathematically eliminated and will only be playing for pride in this final round.
