The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA President Gianni Infantino have issued a stern condemnation of the chaotic scenes that marred Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal.
While Senegal ultimately secured their second AFCON title with a 1-0 extra-time victory, the match in Rabat will be remembered for a 15-minute walk-off, pitch invasions, and a refereeing controversy that nearly led to an abandonment.
The Stoppage that Shocked the World
The drama reached its peak in the 95th minute of normal time when referee Ndala Ngambo (DR Congo) awarded a penalty to Morocco following a VAR review for a challenge on Brahim Díaz.
In an unprecedented move, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw ordered his players to leave the pitch in protest. The match was halted for over ten minutes as dozens of Senegalese fans attempted to storm the field, leading to violent clashes with security personnel.
“Unacceptable Conduct”
In an official statement released Monday, CAF made its position clear:
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behavior, especially actions targeting the refereeing team or match organizers. We are reviewing all footage to take appropriate disciplinary action against those found guilty.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who was in attendance, also slammed the walk-off: “It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner. Referee decisions must be respected to protect the essence of football.”
Disciplinary Measures Looming

Despite the eventual restart which saw Édouard Mendy save the penalty from Brahim Díaz before Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in extra time Senegal may face severe penalties.
Disciplinary bodies are currently analyzing images of the coach’s instructions and the fan violence. Reports suggest that Pape Thiaw could face a lengthy suspension, and the Senegalese federation may be hit with heavy fines.
Morocco Pursues Legal Action
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has already filed an official complaint with FIFA and CAF, arguing that the 15-minute interruption “greatly affected the normal course of the match and the players’ performance.”
