Bernardo Silva has rejected an approach from Benfica despite growing uncertainty surrounding his future at Manchester City. With his contract nearing its end, the Portuguese midfielder is now free to sign a pre-contract agreement this January, making him one of the most sought-after names in the transfer market.

The 30-year-old’s representatives have received inquiries from several major European clubs in recent weeks. While Bernardo Silva remains open to renewing his stay at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City have yet to formally open negotiations, fueling speculation about a possible move next season.

Benfica were among the clubs to test the waters, signaling interest in bringing the midfielder back to the club where he began his professional career. However, despite his emotional connection to the Lisbon side, Bernardo has made it clear that a return to Portuguese football is not currently part of his plans.

Midfielder says no to Benfica return

According to The Sun, Benfica made direct contact in an attempt to secure Bernardo Silva as a free agent for the next European season. The club viewed his potential return as a statement signing and a major boost to their squad.

The midfielder, however, declined the proposal. He believes the timing is not right to return to Portugal and prefers to continue competing at the highest level in one of Europe’s top leagues. At this stage of his career, Bernardo is focused on maintaining his presence in elite competitions.

Despite the lack of a renewal offer, Manchester City remain his priority. Bernardo is reportedly willing to listen to the club if talks begin, but he is also carefully evaluating alternative options should no agreement be reached.

European giants monitor Bernardo Silva situation

Bernardo Silva’s contract situation has attracted attention across the continent. AC Milan, Juventus, and FC Barcelona are all reportedly monitoring his status and could move quickly if he becomes officially available.

As January progresses and City’s silence continues, interest in the Portuguese midfielder is expected to intensify. For now, Bernardo Silva’s future remains unresolved, but one thing is clear: a return to Benfica is off the table.
