PSG crushes Atalanta 4-0 in Champions League debut, title defense begins with a bang

Paris Saint-Germain began their UEFA Champions League title defense with a statement victory, thrashing Atalanta 4-0 at the Parc des Princes.
PSG dominate from the first minute
Luis Enrique’s side showed no signs of easing into the competition, opening the scoring just three minutes in. Brazilian defender Marquinhos latched onto a perfect assist from Fabián Ruíz to put the reigning champions ahead.
The French giants controlled every aspect of the game, recording 22 total shots (13 on target) compared to Atalanta’s seven. Goalkeeper Carnesecchi prevented a heavier defeat with nine key saves, including a penalty stop against Barcola.
Kvaratskhelia and Nuno Mendes shine
PSG doubled their lead before halftime when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia produced a stunning solo run and strike in the 39th minute, leaving Atalanta’s defense exposed.
Shortly after the restart, Portuguese full-back Nuno Mendes showcased his attacking flair, cutting past De Roon and firing into the corner for 3-0.
Gonçalo Ramos seals emphatic win
In stoppage time, Atalanta’s defensive lapse gifted PSG their fourth. A poor back pass was intercepted by Gonçalo Ramos, who chipped the ball over Carnesecchi to seal the rout and underline PSG’s dominance.
What the result means
With the win, PSG sit top of the league phase table on three points and a +4 goal difference. Atalanta, on the other hand, drop to the bottom of the standings and will need a quick response to stay alive in the competition.
Despite the heavy defeat, fixtures on Thursday could still shuffle the early standings of the new Champions League format.
