Lewandowski values Barcelona’s squad and denies absolute ownership: “I don’t have to play by decree”

Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona’s top scorer last season and a two-time FIFA World Player of the Year, has acknowledged his changing role at the club. Despite being a key reference in attack, the Polish striker has not started several recent matches under Hansi Flick.
Lewandowski was left out of the squad in Barça’s 3-0 win over Mallorca and featured only as a late substitute against Levante and Rayo Vallecano, marking a different scenario compared to last year.
“I’m in a different situation personally. I’m not so focused on the number of minutes. I don’t have to play by decree. Our squad allows for rotation, and that’s important. Sometimes it’s better to focus on the quality of minutes than the quantity,” Lewandowski said during the international break.
Barcelona’s attacking reinforcements
Barcelona bolstered their frontline this summer by signing Marcus Rashford, giving Flick more options to rotate his squad. The English forward was also recalled to the national team by Thomas Tuchel.
Lewandowski admitted fatigue was an issue last season:
“I played many high-intensity games, and towards the end, I even played while injured. This year, we’ll monitor how I’m feeling more closely.”
Focus on Champions League challenges
Barcelona are set for a demanding Champions League group stage, facing Newcastle, PSG, Olympiacos, Club Brugge, Chelsea, Eintracht Frankfurt, Slavia Prague, and Copenhagen. With little recovery time between matches, Lewandowski highlighted the need for careful management.
“We know recovery time will be limited once the Champions League starts. Managing physical fatigue will be key. I’m aware of the intensity of our style, and all players will need rest at some point,” he added.
Still ready to lead
Despite fewer minutes so far, Lewandowski remains confident he will play a decisive role as the season progresses.
“The start of this season will be as difficult as the last. I feel prepared, and when the time comes, I’ll be ready.”
