Jamie Carragher questions Jadon Sancho’s struggles at Manchester United: “I’ve never seen anything like it”

Former Liverpool defender compares Sancho’s lack of impact at Old Trafford with his successful spell at Borussia Dortmund.
Sancho’s disappointing United chapter
Jadon Sancho continues to divide opinions in England. Currently on loan at Aston Villa, the forward was once again the subject of debate on The Overlap, where Jamie Carragher questioned why the £73 million signing has failed to shine at Manchester United since arriving in 2021.
Carragher reacted to YouTuber Adam McKola, who went as far as calling Sancho the worst signing in United’s history. While the former Liverpool defender did not fully agree, he admitted he remains baffled by Sancho’s lack of progress.
Carragher’s frustration: “I don’t know what he does”
Reflecting on Sancho’s early career, Carragher highlighted the player’s success in the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund, where he was regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young wingers.
“It’s funny with Sancho because he had this reputation at Borussia Dortmund,” Carragher said. “Gary [Neville] and I didn’t put him in an England squad back then, even though he was doing brilliantly in Germany. I don’t know what Sancho’s deal is. Every player has something, but I can’t think of what he does. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.”
Numbers that tell the story
Since his £73m move from Dortmund, Sancho has played 83 matches for Manchester United, scoring 12 goals and providing 7 assists. His inconsistency led to multiple loan spells:
- 2022/23: Loan to Borussia Dortmund (21 appearances)
- 2023/24: Loan to Chelsea, where he enjoyed one of his best runs with 14 goal contributions in 41 games
- 2024/25: Loan to Aston Villa, where he is now looking to rebuild under Unai Emery
Can Sancho still revive his career?
At just 25, Sancho’s career is far from over, but the contrast between his Bundesliga brilliance and Premier League struggles remains stark. While Carragher’s comments reflect growing frustration, Aston Villa could yet provide the winger with the environment he needs to finally deliver on his long-standing promise.
