Barcelona president Laporta demands Frenkie de Jong contract renewal or sale in January

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has issued a clear ultimatum regarding Frenkie de Jong’s future: the Dutch midfielder must sign a new deal soon, or the club will look to sell him in the next transfer window.
Laporta’s Firm Stance
De Jong’s current contract with Barcelona expires at the end of next season. Laporta stressed that the Catalan club cannot afford to lose such a valuable player for free, insisting that an agreement must be reached “within weeks” rather than months.
Speaking to Spanish outlet El Nacional, Laporta explained that the club has learned from past mistakes, when top players departed without generating revenue. The president believes either a renewal or a profitable sale is the only solution.
De Jong’s Position
Despite Barcelona’s urgency, Frenkie de Jong has repeatedly expressed happiness with life at the club and in the city. However, his hesitation in finalizing the renewal has raised questions within the boardroom.
Laporta suggested that the delay may be a tactic from De Jong’s entourage to secure improved terms. Even so, he warned that the club will not go beyond its financial limits, regardless of the risk of losing the midfielder.
Possible January Sale
If no progress is made soon, Laporta admitted that Barcelona would consider offers in January. Options could include bids from major European clubs or lucrative proposals from Saudi Arabia, both of which are monitoring the situation.
The president concluded that protecting Barcelona’s assets is a priority, and allowing De Jong to leave for free in 2026 is “not an option.”
