What was Darwin Núñez’s debut like for Al-Hilal? Liverpool fans share their thoughts on the first game

Darwin Núñez made a goalscoring start to life at Al-Hilal, netting in a 6–0 friendly win over Swiss side Aarau just weeks after completing a high-profile move from Liverpool. The Uruguayan striker, introduced in the second half, needed little time to make his mark, adding further excitement to Al-Hilal’s attacking options for the season ahead.

Record Transfer and Liverpool’s Loss

Al-Hilal paid €53 million (R$335 million) for Núñez, a fee that includes performance-related bonuses. Liverpool, who had signed him from Benfica in 2022 for €75 million (R$392 million at the time), accepted a financial loss on the deal as part of their summer overhaul.

The 25-year-old’s departure has sparked mixed reactions among Reds supporters. Many lamented the loss of a player admired for his charisma and on-pitch energy, while others viewed the transfer as a sensible sporting decision given Liverpool’s tactical direction and squad needs.

Fans Split Over Departure

“A perfect first goal! When a player scores so quickly for a new club, it’s more than just luck. Al-Hilal’s attack has become even more intriguing for the upcoming games,” one Liverpool supporter commented on social media.

Another fan added: “On a day when Liverpool’s quality dropped after the departures, Darwin scored. A mistake if he isn’t well replaced by Richard Hughes,” referring to the club’s new sporting director.

The debate intensified as Liverpool, without Núñez, lost the FA Community Shield final to Crystal Palace on penalties. Despite a strong first half, the Reds’ lack of depth from the bench proved costly in the second period.

Liverpool Record and Potential Replacement

Núñez leaves Anfield with 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 official appearances, lifting three trophies during his time in England most notably the Premier League title.

Liverpool’s top target to replace him is Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, a move valued at close to R$1 billion. However, the Magpies are reluctant to part with their star striker, potentially complicating the Reds’ plans before the transfer window closes.
