Real Madrid wants to sign Donnarumma, Konaté and Upamecano in 2026; all can arrive for free

Los Blancos look to repeat their proven contract expiration strategy
Real Madrid is already preparing for the 2026 transfer window, with three high-profile names on their radar: Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG), Ibrahima Konaté (Liverpool), and Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich). All three players are approaching the end of their contracts, and Florentino Pérez plans to take full advantage of the opportunity to sign them for free or at minimal cost, following a trend that has served the club well in recent years.
Following the Mbappé and Alexander-Arnold Strategy
In recent seasons, Real Madrid has focused on securing top-tier players near the end of their contracts. Kylian Mbappé’s free transfer from PSG in 2024 is the most prominent example. Similarly, Trent Alexander-Arnold joined from Liverpool for a symbolic fee, as his contract was also close to expiring.
According to reports from Fichajes, Real Madrid intends to repeat this model in 2026, with Konaté viewed as the main target among the trio. Head coach Xabi Alonso is reportedly pushing for his arrival as soon as possible.
Konaté Signals Liverpool Exit
Konaté’s current deal with Liverpool expires in June 2026, and the player has reportedly declined renewal talks. Real Madrid would like to bring the 25-year-old defender in immediately, but the Reds’ asking price is too high for the Spanish giants this summer. Therefore, they may wait until 2026 to sign him for free.
Donnarumma: Courtois Successor?
While Gianluigi Donnarumma is also out of contract in 2026, Real Madrid doesn’t intend to make a move yet. The club remains fully committed to Thibaut Courtois as its starting goalkeeper. However, with Courtois nearing the final stretch of his career, Donnarumma could arrive in 2026 to gradually assume the starting role.
The Italian international is also being monitored by Chelsea and Manchester United, meaning Madrid could face strong competition if he enters the free-agent market.
Upamecano Also on the Shortlist
Dayot Upamecano is the third name on Madrid’s shortlist. The Bayern Munich defender has completed four seasons in the Bundesliga and made 38 appearances during the last campaign. With his contract also set to expire in 2026, the French center-back represents another cost-effective solution for reinforcing the backline.
Real Madrid Still Looking for a Midfield Leader
While defensive reinforcements are being planned for 2026, midfield remains a more immediate concern. Since Toni Kroos’ retirement, the club has been actively searching for a new leader in the center of the pitch.
Rodri, Enzo Fernández, and Alexis Mac Allister have all been mentioned as potential targets, but any deal would likely be complex and expensive.
