Real Madrid decides not to sign midfielder for Xabi Alonso this summer

Real Madrid have ruled out bringing in a defensive midfielder during the current transfer window, despite requests from new coach Xabi Alonso. Club president Florentino Pérez made the final decision after discussions with the board, according to journalists Mário Cortegana and Guillermo Rai.

Why Madrid said no

The board considered several profiles but concluded that none offered the right balance between cost, quality, and performance. As a result, Los Blancos will continue the season with the current squad rather than invest in a short-term solution.

Xabi’s request and future plans

Alonso had asked for reinforcements in midfield, but the directors believe all positions are already well covered. Still, the long-term plan includes signing a top-level midfielder in 2026, with PSG’s Vitinha and Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister among the main targets, as reported by Defensa Central.

An internal ‘reinforcement’

Instead of a new signing, Xabi Alonso will promote academy talent Thiago Pitarch, who impressed in preseason training. The young midfielder is expected to have opportunities with the first team this season.

Next transfer window options

Although the search for a midfielder is postponed, Real Madrid continue to monitor other positions. A potential move for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté remains on the table, with his contract at Anfield running until June 2026.
