Real Madrid considers using Alexander-Arnold in midfield to cover Xabi Alonso’s gaps

Real Madrid’s summer signing Trent Alexander-Arnold could take on a new role under Xabi Alonso. According to The Athletic, the Englishman, who arrived as a star reinforcement for the right flank, may be moved into midfield to respond to the squad’s tactical needs.

A solution in midfield

Alonso is reportedly considering deploying Alexander-Arnold as a defensive midfielder, a position the 25-year-old has already performed at Liverpool. His passing range, vision, and ability to break lines make him a natural option to help orchestrate Madrid’s buildup from the center of the pitch.

If used in that role, Alexander-Arnold would be closer to the forwards, potentially feeding Kylian Mbappé with vertical passes and boosting the involvement of Vinícius Júnior on the wings. The move could transform Real Madrid’s attacking fluidity in the coming months.

Who would play at right-back?

The tactical shift would leave a gap in defense. In that scenario, Dani Carvajal is expected to reclaim his place at right-back. The Spaniard missed the final stretch of last season due to injury but is now fully fit and seen as a leader in the dressing room.

Xabi Alonso demands intensity

Alonso’s project at Madrid is still taking shape. After a narrow 1-0 win over Osasuna in the La Liga opener, the coach underlined the need for higher fitness levels and intensity across the squad.

Defensive solidity was the standout in the debut, with Éder Militão and Dean Huijsen starting. However, Alonso has already warned that no player is guaranteed a permanent place, promising strong competition for every position.
