Matheus Cunha impresses in his first official match and receives praise from the Arsenal goalkeeper

Manchester United fell 1-0 to Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday (17) in the Premier League opener, but new signing Matheus Cunha left a strong impression, earning praise from both teammates and rival goalkeeper David Raya.

Cunha Creates Problems for Arsenal’s Defense

Wearing the No. 10 shirt, the Brazilian forward was United’s most dangerous player, consistently dropping between the lines to link play and generate attacking opportunities. Cunha registered three shots on target, all of which forced strong saves from Arsenal’s Raya.

One of those moments stood out for the Spanish goalkeeper, who admitted after the match that he was surprised to have kept it out.

“The save on Cunha’s shot was difficult. To be honest, I don’t even know how I stopped it — it was so close to my feet,” Raya told Sky Sports.

New Duo Earns Praise

Alongside Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo also impressed on his debut. The Cameroonian exploited space on the right wing and was heavily involved in United’s attacking play.

Captain Bruno Fernandes highlighted their immediate impact:

“Mbeumo and Cunha created a lot, they were in the right positions. We know they’re dangerous and pose a threat. It was a good first impression.”

Amorim Backs His Reinforcements

Manager Ruben Amorim echoed the praise, stressing that both players fit seamlessly into his tactical system.

“Everyone can see that they are ideal for this role,” the Portuguese coach said, reinforcing his confidence in the duo.

Despite the defeat decided by an error from goalkeeper Altay Bayındır that allowed Riccardo Calafiori’s goal United fans applauded the team off the pitch for their effort and intensity.

What’s Next for United

Manchester United return to action on Sunday, August 24, against Fulham at Craven Cottage. Both Cunha and Mbeumo are expected to start again as the Red Devils chase their first win of the new Premier League season.
