Manchester City’s Claudio Echeverri set to be loaned to Borussia Dortmund: a career-changing move?

Borussia Dortmund are pushing to sign Claudio Echeverri on loan with an option to buy a move that could finally give the Argentine jewel the stage he needs to shine.
From unused prospect at City to sought-after talent in Germany
Claudio Echeverri, just 19, is widely regarded as one of the brightest young stars from South America. Manchester City secured him from River Plate in January 2024, but his time in England has been frustrating. Despite a memorable free-kick goal at the Club World Cup against Al-Ain, he has played only three matches in a City shirt and was even left out of the squad in his Premier League debut.
Instead of becoming more involved this summer, his path to minutes became even narrower. Pep Guardiola’s squad added Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki — direct competitors for Echeverri’s preferred positions.
Dortmund see Echeverri as a future leader
Borussia Dortmund, under Niko Kovač, believe the Argentine midfielder could thrive in the Bundesliga. Unlike City, the German club offers a clearer path to the starting XI. The main rivals for his spot would be Giovanni Reyna, who has struggled to nail down a starting role, and Julian Brandt, who is past his prime. Karim Adeyemi can also operate in an advanced midfield role, but he is primarily used as a winger.
For Dortmund, the loan would be low-risk with the option to make it permanent, while for Echeverri, it could mean more minutes, responsibility, and the chance to showcase his creativity in a competitive league.
Why Dortmund is the right fit
Echeverri is a natural playmaker, comfortable as an attacking midfielder, left winger, or even deeper in midfield. His vision, left-footed technique, and ability to dictate tempo are exactly what Dortmund are looking for as they rebuild their identity. With more game time and less pressure than at City, the Argentine could finally take the step from “prospect” to “protagonist.”
If the deal goes through, Borussia Dortmund could be giving one of football’s brightest talents the career-defining platform he has been waiting for.
