Liverpool sets astronomical price for Darwin Núñez; Milan and Juventus battle for striker

Liverpool is ready to part ways with striker Darwin Núñez, setting a price tag of €70 million (R$449 million), according to journalist Ben Jacobs. The club hopes to recoup part of its original €85 million investment, made when the Uruguayan forward was signed from Benfica in 2022.

Núñez Placed on Transfer List After Disappointing Season

Despite arriving as a marquee signing, Núñez failed to meet expectations under new head coach Arne Slot. He scored just seven goals in 47 appearances last season and gradually lost his place in the starting XI to Cody Gakpo. As a result, Liverpool has officially made him available for transfer.

The 26-year-old’s lack of fit in Slot’s tactical system and inconsistent finishing have prompted the club to reassess its long-term plans, making a sale this summer likely.

Serie A Giants Milan and Juventus Lead Race

Interest in Núñez remains strong across Europe. AC Milan and Juventus are reportedly the frontrunners, each seeking to bolster their attacking lines. Milan, under returning manager Massimiliano Allegri, is looking to pair Núñez with new signing Santiago Giménez, potentially giving the Uruguayan a clear path to a starting role.

Juventus, however, presents stiffer competition in the form of Dusan Vlahović and newly signed Jonathan David, with Arkadiusz Milik also in the squad. While both Italian clubs have the resources and ambition to sign Núñez, Milan may be a more attractive destination due to reduced competition for minutes.

Liverpool Faces Loss on €85M Signing

Núñez was acquired from Benfica in one of Liverpool’s most expensive transfers, worth up to €85 million (currently R$545 million). While he showed flashes of potential in his debut campaign, his form has since dipped, and the club now views a sale as a chance to recover value and restructure the attack.

With the transfer window open until September 1st, and interest building in Italy, Núñez’s departure could soon become one of the most high-profile moves of the summer.
