Liverpool lead race for Malick Fofana after Luis Diaz exit, agent confirms

Lyon’s young star drawing Premier League interest amid French club’s financial troubles
Liverpool has emerged as the frontrunner to sign Lyon winger Malick Fofana, according to the player’s agent. The 19-year-old Belgian talent has attracted interest from multiple Premier League clubs, including Everton and Newcastle United, but the Reds are reportedly the player’s top choice.
The Merseyside club is in search of a replacement for Luis Díaz, who was recently sold to Bayern Munich in a big-money move, and Fofana is being considered as a long-term solution on the left flank.
Liverpool Move Would Be a Dream, Says Fofana’s Agent
Fofana’s representative, Bobo Fofana, spoke to Africa Foot this week and made his client’s preferences clear.
“Liverpool would be the choice of choice,” he stated. “He has the potential to break into the rotation, and above all, we want to see him follow in the footsteps of African legends like Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, and El Hadji Diouf.”
While no formal offer has been submitted by Liverpool as of now, internal discussions are ongoing following Díaz’s exit. Cody Gakpo is expected to start the season on the left wing, but the club is assessing depth, with Hugo Ekitike and youngster Rio Ngumoha also in the mix.
Lyon’s Financial Crisis Forces Exit Strategy
Fofana’s availability is tied to Lyon’s urgent need to offload assets this summer due to financial instability. The club narrowly avoided relegation from Ligue 1 last season, and key players including Rayan Cherki, who joined Manchester City have already left.
The club is reportedly open to negotiations for Fofana, with his value expected to exceed €20 million given his age, profile, and rising reputation in Europe.
Newcastle Seen as Logical Development Path
Despite Fofana’s admiration for Liverpool, his agent revealed that Newcastle United also represents a serious and strategic alternative.
“The rational choice would be Newcastle,” said Bobo Fofana. “It’s a well-structured club, which could serve as a first step to gain experience before, who knows, joining one of the big five European clubs.”
The agent also compared Fofana’s playing style to that of Manchester United’s Amad Diallo, citing “speed, impact, and creative flair” as standout traits that could flourish in the Premier League environment.
