Kairat reaches Champions League for the first time

The football world turned its eyes to Kazakhstan after Kairat Almaty secured a historic qualification for the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. The club stunned fans by eliminating Celtic, alongside victories over Olimpija Ljubljana, Kuopion Palloseura and Slovan Bratislava, ensuring its first-ever participation in Europe’s top competition.

From Soviet roots to national pride

Founded in 1954 as Lokomotiv Alma-Ata, the club underwent name changes before becoming Kairat in 1956. During the Soviet era, it was the only representative of the Kazakh SSR in the league, which earned it the nickname “Halyq komandasy” (Team of the Nation).

Kairat collected important titles throughout its history: 4 Kazakhstan Premier Leagues, 10 Kazakhstan Cups, 3 Super Cups, 2 Soviet First Leagues, and even international trophies like the USSR Federation Cup and the European Railways Cup. Its main rivalry is against FC Astana, in what is known as the Derby of the Two Capitals.

Stars to watch in Europe

The club’s Champions League debut also spotlights young talent. Dastan Satpaev, just 17 years old, is already the tournament’s top scorer with three goals. Alongside him, Portuguese forward Jorginho (27) brings experience, having arrived from Luxembourg’s Differdange, where he was league top scorer in 2023/24.

When will Kairat play?

The official Champions League draw takes place this Thursday (28) at 2 pm (Brasília time). With the new format, Kairat will debut between September 16 and 18, 2025, marking its historic first match in the group stage.
