Bundesliga debut hero: Ansah scores twice in Union Berlin’s 2-1 win over Stuttgart
Union Berlin opened their Bundesliga campaign with a 2-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart on Saturday, powered by a stunning debut performance from Ilyas Ansah, who scored both goals for the hosts.
Dream start for Ansah
The 19-year-old forward announced himself in spectacular fashion in the 18th minute, smashing a long-range volley from 25 meters that crashed off the post and into the net. He doubled Union’s lead just before halftime, timing his run perfectly to control a cross and slot past the goalkeeper in stoppage time (45’+4).
Ansah’s brace sent the Alte Försterei crowd into raptures and left Stuttgart chasing the game.
Stuttgart react but fall short
Despite having more possession in the first half, Stuttgart struggled to break down Union’s compact defense. Their best chances came from headers by Chabot and Vagnoman, but goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow stood firm.
After the break, Stuttgart pushed harder. Undav hit the crossbar with a header, while Mittelstädt and Karazor both forced saves from Rönnow. The visitors finally pulled one back in the 86th minute, when substitute Tiago Tomás flicked in a clever finish at the far post.
Deep into stoppage time, Stuttgart thought they had equalized through Nick Woltemade, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside. Union held on for the win, with Rönnow once again decisive in the final minutes.

Union Berlin start the 2025/26 Bundesliga season with three points and a breakout star in Ansah, whose dream debut will dominate headlines. Stuttgart, meanwhile, paid the price for lacking sharpness in attack despite their late surge.
