Barcelona faces a “critical” moment in women’s football, despite its dominance on the field

Barcelona’s women’s team is coming off another trophy-laden season, but financial pressures and contract uncertainties are raising alarms ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

A Season of Domestic Perfection

In 2024/25, Barça reaffirmed its dominance in Spanish football, winning all domestic competitions the F League, Copa de la Reina, and Spanish Super Cup. The team secured the F League title with 28 wins in 30 matches, wrapping up the championship weeks before the season ended.

The Blaugrana also reached the Women’s Champions League final, ultimately falling to Arsenal but still closing the year with what many consider one of the most successful seasons in recent memory.

With stars such as Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas both Ballon d’Or winners Barcelona remains the backbone of the Spanish national team, which continues to thrive on the international stage.

Financial Gaps and Contract Concerns

Behind the success, club officials face pressing challenges. Barcelona must raise €1 million before year’s end to balance its 2025 accounts. At the same time, nine first-team players are entering the final year of their contracts, with deals set to expire in 2026, creating uncertainty in squad planning.

Sources close to the club describe the moment as “critical,” with long-term stability dependent on resolving both the budget gap and the pending renewals.

Next Matches and Preseason Tour

Before returning to F League action on August 31, Barcelona will contest the Copa Catalunya final on August 16, followed by a preseason tour of Mexico from August 19–25.

The upcoming months will test the club’s ability to sustain its winning momentum on the pitch while addressing growing questions behind the scenes.
