Thiago Almada arrives at Atlético de Madrid and mentions Simeone and Álvarez

Atlético de Madrid have officially signed Thiago Almada from Lyon in a deal worth €21 million (approximately R$135 million), adding the 2022 World Cup-winning midfielder to Diego Simeone’s reshaped squad ahead of the 2025–26 season.
The 23-year-old Argentine was unveiled on Tuesday (July 29) and spoke with excitement about his move to the Spanish capital. “It’s a dream come true. I’ve always loved Atlético, and when the opportunity came, I didn’t hesitate,” Almada said. “Now I want to prove why I’m here.”
From Lyon to Madrid
Almada joined Atlético after a short but impactful spell at Olympique Lyonnais, where he made 20 appearances, scoring two goals and registering five assists. Before that, he impressed at Botafogo, which held his economic rights, following his early development at Vélez Sarsfield.
He becomes part of a broader transfer push by the Colchoneros, who are reinforcing their squad with several new arrivals including Álex Baena, Dávid Hancko, Matteo Ruggeri, Johnny Cardoso, Clément Lenglet, Juan Musso, and Marc Pubill.
Reuniting with Fellow Argentines
The midfielder will be managed by Diego Simeone and reunite with Argentine teammates Julián Álvarez and Nahuel Molina. Almada also expressed appreciation for the support of Ángel Correa, whom he is expected to eventually succeed in Atlético’s midfield rotation.
“I was warmly welcomed and feel very comfortable with the group,” Almada said at his presentation. “I’m especially grateful to the coach and Ángel [Correa] for helping me settle in.”
Chemistry with Julián Álvarez
Almada highlighted his on-field connection with fellow World Cup winner Julián Álvarez: “In the national team, I’ve assisted him several times. Now we have more time together to build something even stronger here at Atlético.”
Expected Debut in August
Almada is expected to join the team for preseason friendlies in the coming days. His official debut is projected for August, when Atlético begins its La Liga campaign.
The move represents a key step in Almada’s career as he looks to secure a starting role in Simeone’s evolving midfield and establish himself in Spanish football.
