Spain’s national team star Vicky Lopez talks about her comparisons to Lamine Yamal and her inspirations

Spain’s rising star Vicky Lopez has addressed the comparisons between her and fellow teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal, ahead of Spain’s quarter-final clash against hosts Switzerland at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025. The match is scheduled for Friday, July 18 at 21:00 CEST (20:00 UK time), at St. Jakob-Park in Basel.

Lopez, 18, emerged as one of the standout performers during Spain’s dominant group-stage campaign, helping La Roja secure three consecutive wins. Her flair and maturity on the pitch have drawn parallels with Barcelona teammate Yamal, who similarly burst onto the senior stage at a young age.

“We’re both young and play with confidence,” Lopez told UEFA. “I think the best player in history is Lionel Messi, but I also watched Neymar a lot. He seemed a little crazy, but his style of play added a lot to the team. Now, I’d highlight Alexia Putellas’ vision and Claudia Pina’s incredible goals.”

Spain entered the tournament as one of the pre-tournament favourites, and their performances so far have justified that status. La Roja opened their campaign with a commanding 5–0 win over Portugal, led by a standout display from Esther González. They followed up with a 6–2 demolition of Belgium, featuring a brace from Alexia Putellas.

In the final group-stage match, Spain came from behind to defeat Italy 3–1, despite rotating much of the squad to rest key players. The win secured their position as group leaders and confirmed their place in the quarter-finals.

Switzerland, meanwhile, reached the knockout round with a dramatic last-minute draw against Finland in their final group game. The hosts advanced on goal difference, but will face a stern challenge against one of the most complete squads in the tournament.

Spain remain the frontrunners to lift the title, not only due to their results but also thanks to the depth and talent across their roster. Players like Putellas, Gonzalez, and Lopez have made major contributions in what is shaping up to be a historic run.

The quarter-final between Spain and Switzerland kicks off Friday, July 18, at 21:00 local time (20:00 UK). The match will be broadcast live across Europe via major digital platforms.
