Real Madrid block Fran García’s exit amid concerns over Ferland Mendy’s fitness

Real Madrid has decided not to negotiate the departure of left-back Fran García during the current transfer window, largely due to ongoing concerns over Ferland Mendy’s fitness and García’s resurgence under new coach Xabi Alonso.

Mendy’s Injury Concerns Halt García Transfer

According to journalist Matteo Moretto, doubts surrounding Mendy’s physical condition have prompted Real Madrid to retain García, who has impressed since Alonso’s arrival. Initially seen as a candidate for a summer transfer, the 24-year-old defender is now firmly in the club’s plans.

García’s performances during the FIFA Club World Cup showcased his technical growth and earned him more trust from the coaching staff. The player himself credited Alonso’s coaching style for his recent improvement.

Álvaro Carreras Poses New Competition

Despite staying, Fran García faces stiff competition from Álvaro Carreras, recently signed from Benfica. Carreras arrived in Madrid as the most expensive left-back in the club’s history after an impressive stint in Portugal that saw him involved in nine goals last season.

Carreras was one of Alonso’s top transfer targets and is reportedly favored to become the club’s starting left-back. Nevertheless, García is expected to compete for the position, especially if Mendy continues to struggle with injuries.

Madrid’s New-Look Defense Takes Shape

Real Madrid is likely to field a defensive line featuring Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen, and Carreras as the first-choice back four. However, García’s recent form may influence Alonso’s final decisions throughout the season.

Heavy Investment in Defense

So far, President Florentino Pérez has committed €167.5 million (approximately R$1.09 billion) in this transfer window, focusing primarily on defensive reinforcements. The revamped squad is being carefully shaped to support Alonso’s tactical vision and maintain Real Madrid’s dominance at home and in Europe.
