Brazilian midfielder could face ban or be cleared in betting violation case

The future of Lucas Paquetá may finally be resolved this Friday (July 25). According to O Globo, the English Football Association (FA) is expected to announce the official verdict on the investigation involving the West Ham and Brazil midfielder, who is accused of violating betting rules.

Four Charges Could Define His European Career

The 26-year-old player is under investigation for four breaches of FA Rule E5.1, which prohibits manipulating matches for betting purposes. The FA alleges that Paquetá deliberately received yellow cards during four Premier League matches between November 2022 and August 2023.

If found guilty, the midfielder could face a multi-year ban, casting serious doubt on his career in European football. If cleared, however, he could be free to resume negotiations with major clubs.

Paquetá Denies All Allegations

Throughout the process, Lucas Paquetá has maintained his innocence, claiming full cooperation with authorities since the case began. He has not publicly commented further but is said to be deeply affected by the emotional and professional toll the accusations have taken.

Manchester City Interest Was Halted

Before the charges emerged, Paquetá was reportedly close to a move to Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola identifying him as a key midfield target. The investigation immediately halted those negotiations, placing his career on hold at its peak.

Flamengo Could Become a Realistic Option

Should the verdict go in his favor, a return to Brazil is being speculated. Flamengo, the club where Paquetá began his career, is considered the most likely destination, especially given his emotional ties with the fanbase.

Recent social media campaigns have intensified calls for his return to Gávea, fueled by Flamengo’s active transfer window and Paquetá’s dip in form at West Ham.
