La Liga doctor predicts complex recovery for Ter Stegen after back injury

Specialist cites goalkeeper-specific movements as major obstacle to full recovery

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is facing a challenging road to recovery following the announcement that he will undergo surgery for persistent back problems. While the German international estimates a three-month absence, experts warn the timeline may be optimistic due to the unique demands of his position.

Surgery and Recovery Timeline Remain Uncertain

Ter Stegen confirmed the upcoming procedure on social media, revealing that renowned French surgeon Dr. Amélie Léglise who previously operated on him two years ago will perform the surgery. The official recovery timeline will only be determined post-operation, depending on how his spine responds to treatment.

Barcelona are not taking chances, and more details about his rehabilitation plan are expected to be released in the days following the procedure.

La Liga Medical Committee Flags Complexity in Goalkeeper Injuries

In an interview with Catalunya Ràdio, Dr. Jordi Ardèvol, a member of La Liga’s medical committee and former Barcelona staff doctor, expressed concern over Ter Stegen’s condition.

“The goalkeeper’s role is quite unique in relation to this type of injury,” Ardèvol explained. “They frequently execute trunk flexion, extension, and rotation, which puts immense stress on the spinal column. These repeated movements complicate the recovery process.”

Having worked in Barcelona’s medical department for 16 years, Ardèvol emphasized that this is not Ter Stegen’s first back operation a factor that could further prolong his rehabilitation.

Barcelona May Seek Extended Medical Leave

Although Ardèvol is no longer directly affiliated with the club to avoid a conflict of interest, La Liga’s medical committee will soon evaluate the situation. They will rely on detailed reports from both Barcelona’s internal medical team and Dr. Léglise to determine whether Ter Stegen qualifies for extended medical leave under league regulations.

The final decision will be made via a formal vote within the committee, independent of Ardèvol’s past affiliations with the Catalan club.
