Iñaki Williams blasts Barcelona after failed Nico Williams negotiations

Iñaki Williams has openly criticized FC Barcelona following the collapse of their latest attempt to sign his brother, Nico Williams, stating that the club used media pressure and misinformation to influence negotiations. The Athletic Club forward accused Barcelona of misleading the public amid speculation that a deal was close.
Barcelona’s top transfer target ends up renewing with Athletic Club
Barcelona had made Nico Williams one of their top transfer priorities for the 2025 summer window, but the 22-year-old winger has now signed a long-term extension with Athletic Club until June 2035. The renewal ends months of rumors linking him to several European giants, including Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich.
Speaking to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Iñaki Williams claimed the Catalan club never acted transparently during discussions.
“They wanted to apply pressure with their media campaign. They really muddied things up. Many of the things they said on social media or leaked were lies. My brother had already made up his mind,” said Iñaki.
Barça’s second failure in two years to sign Nico
This is the second consecutive year that Barcelona has failed to secure the signing of Nico Williams. In the summer of 2024, financial limitations reportedly prevented the club from matching Athletic’s valuation. In 2025, despite stronger positioning in the transfer market, Barça once again came up short this time due to the player’s firm commitment to stay in Bilbao.
Nico Williams enjoyed a standout 2024/25 season, scoring 11 goals and providing 7 assists in 45 appearances for Athletic. His form attracted major interest across Europe, but the decision to remain in La Liga with his current club underscores his loyalty and belief in Athletic’s long-term project.
Barcelona turns attention to other reinforcements
With the Williams deal off the table, Barcelona is now exploring alternative options for its attacking lineup. The club recently completed the signing of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United and is reportedly monitoring Gabriel Jesus, whose future at Arsenal remains uncertain.
While no formal bid has been made, internal discussions about the Brazilian forward are ongoing, as Barcelona seeks to add depth and versatility to its front line ahead of the 2025/26 season.
