Benfica is turning needles for PAOK’s Giannis Konstantelias after Thiago Almada’s link to Atlético de Madrid

Greek playmaker emerges as top alternative after Almada edges closer to Atlético Madrid

With Thiago Almada reportedly nearing a move to Atlético de Madrid, Benfica has shifted its focus to Giannis Konstantelias, a rising star from PAOK and a key player for the Greek national team.

The information, initially reported by Maisfutebol, suggests that Benfica sees the 22-year-old attacking midfielder as a viable replacement for Orkun Kokçu, who was recently loaned to Besiktas with a €25M buyout clause.

Benfica Needs a Midfield Creator

Benfica has been in the market for a dynamic attacking midfielder to fill the creative gap left by Kokçu. Almada was the top target, with the club reportedly willing to spend up to €28 million for 50% of his rights. But with Atlético de Madrid accelerating negotiations for the Argentine, Benfica is preparing a plan B.

Enter Giannis Konstantelias a technically gifted midfielder known for his ball control, dribbling flair, and ability to break defensive lines. His playing style is more vertical and daring compared to Kokçu, making him a different kind of threat in the final third.

PAOK Sets a High Price

Benfica’s interest is serious, but the deal won’t be easy. According to CNN Greece, PAOK is asking between €20 million and €25 million for the player a price tag that could complicate negotiations.

However, with Benfica already showing financial flexibility in their pursuit of Almada, the Lisbon club may have the liquidity to negotiate or match PAOK’s demands if Konstantelias becomes the priority.

Konstantelias by the Numbers

  • Age: 22
  • Position: Attacking Midfielder
  • Club: PAOK
  • Market Value: €17 million (Transfermarkt)
  • Appearances (last 2 seasons): 102
  • Goals: 24
  • Assists: 9
  • National Team: Greece

Known for his driving runs, close control, and creative vision, Konstantelias has become a pillar in PAOK’s attack. He debuted in the 2020/21 season and has matured into a game-changer, often dropping deep to build up play and leading transitions into attack.

Tactical Fit

Under Bruno Lage, Benfica’s midfield requires a player who can operate between the lines, connect with the front three, and create goal-scoring opportunities. Konstantelias seems to check all those boxes offering immediate impact and future resale value, a Benfica trademark.
