Arne Slot explains why Luis Díaz didn’t play in Liverpool’s friendly and reveals the Colombian’s situation

Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed after Saturday’s 4-2 pre-season defeat to AC Milan that Luis Díaz’s absence was related to ongoing transfer talks with Bayern Munich. The Colombian winger was left out of the matchday squad amid speculation over his future at Anfield.

“In Lucho’s situation, yes, it was [linked to his future],” Slot told reporters in the post-match press conference. “There have been a lot of rumors about it lately, and I can’t go into details. But he’s training very well with us, and we’ve decided, for now, not to put him on the field yet.”

Liverpool Resumes Negotiations With Bayern

According to the English press, Liverpool has reopened talks with Bayern Munich over a possible deal for Díaz. The club’s decision to keep him out of friendlies suggests serious consideration is being given to a transfer during the current summer window.

When pressed on whether Díaz himself had requested to leave, Slot avoided giving a direct answer: “Does he want to leave? I’m not the right person to ask.” However, he acknowledged speaking to the player: “Yes, but I’m used to talking to most of my players regularly.”

Liverpool Looks to Young Talent in Díaz’s Absence

With Díaz sidelined, 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha was given a surprise start, lining up alongside Mohamed Salah, Harvey Elliott, and Florian Wirtz. The Dutch manager also introduced several substitutes in the second half, including Jeremy Frimpong, a recent €42 million signing from Bayer Leverkusen, Cody Gakpo, and Ben Doak.

Uncertainty Clouds Díaz’s Future

Luis Díaz is under contract with Liverpool, but both the club and player may be open to a move if the right offer arrives. Bayern Munich remains the most serious contender for the winger’s services, though no official deal has been reached yet.

Slot and Liverpool continue preparations for the 2025/26 season, but the Colombian’s potential departure is likely to be a key storyline in the final weeks of the transfer window.
