Barcelona Open Talks to Re-Sign João Cancelo from Al-Hilal

Barcelona are exploring a move to bring João Cancelo back to Camp Nou, as confirmed by multiple Spanish outlets. According to Esport3, club director Deco has approved the idea and started preliminary negotiations with Al-Hilal, where the Portuguese full-back currently plays.
Cancelo Keen on Return to Barcelona
Cancelo has already expressed interest in returning to Catalonia, where he spent the 2023/24 season on loan, playing 42 matches, scoring 4 goals, and providing 5 assists. Despite a solid campaign, he returned to Manchester City before being transferred permanently to Al-Hilal.
Now, both the player and Barcelona’s management see a second spell as mutually beneficial, particularly under new coach Hansi Flick, who values Cancelo’s versatility on both flanks.
Transfer Negotiations Underway
According to the report, there is no official offer yet, but internal conversations have taken place. The potential transfer fee is estimated at €15 million, a figure seen as realistic by both clubs.
- Contract status: João Cancelo is currently under contract with Al-Hilal until June 2027.
- 2024/25 Season at Al-Hilal: 37 appearances, 2 goals, 10 assists
Agent Jorge Mendes is reportedly involved in the talks and could play a key role in facilitating a return.
Why Cancelo Is a Key Target for Deco and Flick
- Barcelona need a natural right-back with attacking qualities
- Cancelo offers flexibility, able to play on either side of the defense
- He fits the possession-based style of Flick’s system
Director Deco views Cancelo as the “ideal profile” to strengthen the squad without a huge financial outlay.
