Tottenham beats Manchester United and is champion of the Europa League
In a stroke of luck, Brennan Johnson was the hero for Spurs in Bilbao
The wait is over: Tottenham won a title again after 17 years, this Wednesday (21), by beating English rivals Manchester United 1-0 in the 2024-25 Europa League final, in Bilbao, Spain.
The hero of the title was Welshman Brennan Johnson , who scored the winning goal in the 42nd minute of the first half, in a lucky move, which also included a providential deflection by United’s Luke Shaw. Uefa gave goal to Spurs player.
Another hero was Dutchman Micky van de Ven. The defender acrobatically blocked a shot from Hojlund on the line in the second half, preventing the Red Devils from scoring an equaliser.
A title and a place after much suffering
With the victory at the San Mamés stadium, Tottenham secures an unexpected place in the 2025-26 Champions League, after a disastrous season in the Premier League.
Australian coach Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs could finish the domestic league in 17th place , the last place before the relegation zone. If it were in the Brasileirão, the London team would be relegated. United, in turn, are in 16th.
Son’s Redemption
Europa League triumph ends Tottenham’s long drought . The last title as a whole had been in 2008, an English League Cup. In European terms, it has been 41 years since Spurs’ last trophy.
The cup also marks the passage of an idol through the club. South Korean Heung-min Son, who has been at Tottenham for ten years, finally wins a title with the north London club.
Son was even present at the painful defeat in the 2018-19 Champions League final, when Spurs lost the final to Liverpool in Madrid.
