Lyon escapes suspension with three transfer markets blocked

FIFA has lifted the sanction it imposed on Olympique Lyonnais . The world football governing body had imposed a ban on signings for the next three transfer windows due to a €2,000 debt in outstanding transfers.

According to L’Equipe , the sanction is due to the Lions’ failure to comply with the 45-day deadline to pay the amount owed , which resulted in the club receiving a payment order on April 9.

“Once a registration ban has been imposed, the affected club will not be able, for the duration of the sanction, to register new players, whether amateur or professional, at national or international level . The club will only be able to register new players once the ban has been fully served or lifted by the FIFA administration, generally subject to the club completing specific procedures,” FIFA detailed in a strong statement.

However, Lyon’s management announced that the amount had been paid, lifting the sanction that prevented them from making any signings until the 2027 winter transfer window.

“We have been reviewing certain internal procedures over the past few weeks, and this issue was one of them. We have implemented new procedures for the future ,” the French club said.

Olympique Lyonnais isn’t the first club to be included on FIFA’s sanctions list this year. In January, the organization included Mallorca and Rayo Vallecano for a similar situation , however, both teams also resolved the issue, making the harsh punishment last only a day.
