Dibu Martínez needs a psychiatrist

Since the 2022 World Cup final , in which Argentina defeated France on penalties, Emiliano Martínez has been heavily criticized around the world, although mostly on French soil, because of his attitude, both on and off the field.

Emmanuel Petit, the French World Cup winner in 1998, was one of the latest football figures to harshly criticise the Argentine. This was before the new clash between Aston Villa and PSG , and after he appeared in Paris wearing a cap bearing the emblems of the titles won by his country.

“He recently said in an interview that he never goes too far. He needs to go to psychotherapy, see a psychiatrist, because we don’t have the same definition of what limits are. Frankly, that guy should learn to control himself emotionally,” Petit said on the Rothen’s enflamme podcast .

“He shouldn’t be disrespectful, he shouldn’t be aggressive, but it seems like in every game we’re expecting something out of bounds from him,” he said, although he acknowledged that he is an excellent goalkeeper and therefore doesn’t need to exaggerate at certain moments.

“I think he is a very good goalkeeper and he doesn’t need to motivate himself too much, but wherever he goes, he leaves an irritating image of his behaviour. Martínez has gone too far. Enough is enough. I am the first to accept that provocation is part of football and life in general, but he should not constantly fall into defamation,” he said.
