Marcelo announced his retirement from professional football just a few days ago and, after hanging up his boots at the age of 36, he gave an interview to the programme El Hormiguero to look back on his career, talk about the future and, of course, have a bit of fun.
The former Real Madrid defender, considered one of the best left-backs in the history of football, has shared the dressing room with countless stars of the beautiful game. However, when asked about the player who impressed him the most throughout his career, he surprised everyone by mentioning a name that, despite being an excellent player, few would have expected as an answer. “I have played with many excellent players. Always. Ronaldinho, in the national team, was the best, but the one who impressed me the most was Isco, when we were together at Real Madrid,” he revealed.
Marcelo also spoke about his feelings after the announcement of his departure. “I did everything I had to do in football, I was lucky enough to play for the best team in the world and I won a lot of things, but there comes a time when I need new challenges. I’m not tired of football, but I wanted to do other things,” added the full-back, who ended his career with Fluminense .
One of the paths he could take is to become a coach, but Marcelo is not sure about that at the moment. «My wife says I look like a youth coach, but I don’t see myself that way. To be a good coach you need to have an open mind and know how to help all the players», he reflected.
Finally, Marcelo sent a message to the fans and all those who have followed his career with admiration. “I tell the Real Madrid fans that they are wonderful and very good. They teach us. When things go wrong, they boo us, and sometimes I feel sad, but I know that I should improve. The Real Madrid fans are priceless,” he concluded.
