Atlético de Madrid loses to Leganés and ends winning streak
La Liga leaders Diego Simeone’s side have won 15 straight games, a club record; Griezmann misses penalty in the final minutes

Atlético de Madrid’s historic winning streak is over. After 15 consecutive wins, an unprecedented feat for the club, the team coached by Diego Simeone lost to Leganés 1-0 this Saturday, away from home, in the 20th round of the Spanish Championship.
Serbian Matija Nastasic scored Leganés’ goal with a header three minutes into the second half. Atlético de Madrid had a great chance to equalise in the 44th minute when the referee awarded a penalty for Sergio Gonzalez, a decision that was initially overturned and later confirmed by VAR. But Antoine Grizmann missed the penalty that would have guaranteed Atlético at least a point.
With the defeat, Atlético de Madrid remains with 44 points, and could lose the lead in the Spanish Championship to Real Madrid, who have 43 and host Las Palmas this Sunday. Leganés are in 15th, with 22.
Atlético de Madrid’s next match will be against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday at home in the seventh round of the UEFA Champions League. The Spanish team is in 11th place with 12 points, just one less than the German team in fourth.
