The German Football Association (DFB) has announced that from 2025 the country’s Super Cup will be named after Franz Beckenbauer, a former Bayern and Hamburg player and captain of the German national team, who died last January at the age of 78.

“From the 2025/26 season, the Super Cup will be named after the greatest German footballer of all time: Franz Beckenbauer. The annual match between the German champion and the cup winner will in future be called the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup,” the FA announced on Friday.

The Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup will make its debut on August 16 next year, in the match that will kick off the 2025/26 season in German football.

Franz Beckenbauer had an unparalleled career. As a player, he won three consecutive Champions Leagues with Bayern in the 1970s, as well as five Bundesliga titles. With the German national team, he won a European Championship and a World Cup as both a player and coach. In addition to the Bavarians, he also played for Hamburg and, in the United States, the New York Cosmos.
