The transfer window for the 2024/25 season closed this Friday in Europe’s top leagues. In countries like England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France, those who needed to make new signings did so. Those who didn’t sign new signings didn’t sign any more.
The most valuable player of the period was Argentine Julián Álvarez, signed for around 75 million euros from Atlético de Madrid to Manchester City. Check out the ten most expensive transfers in the European market below.
1. Julian Alvarez – Atlético Madrid – €75 million
After winning the World Cup and the Copa América with Argentina and almost every possible title with Manchester City, Julián Álvarez left Pep Guardiola’s team. At 24 years old, the former River Plate player joins Atlético de Madrid for around 75 million euros (R$ 469 million).
2. Dominic Solanke – Tottenham – €64.3 million
A season after losing Harry Kane, Tottenham have strengthened their attacking force with a key player. Former Bournemouth player Solanke is a 26-year-old English centre-forward who scored 19 goals in the last Premier League season and cost Spurs around €64.3 million.
3. Leny Yoro – Manchester United – €62 million
Manchester United beat Real Madrid to secure the signing of 18-year-old Lille defender Leny Yoro. The English club paid the French club €62 million (R$387 million) for the youngster, who has a contract until June 2029.
In pre-season, the defender suffered a foot injury during the English team’s friendly against Arsenal, in Los Angeles, and will need at least three months of recovery, after undergoing surgery.
4. Pedro Neto – Chelsea – €60 million
Among Chelsea’s many signings, Pedro Neto was the most valuable, costing 60 million euros (R$375 million), with a contract until 2031. At 24, the former Wolverhampton player represented Portugal in the last edition of the European Championship. However, he has suffered from physical problems in recent seasons, playing only 56 games in the last three years for the former English team.
5. Moussa Diaby – Al-Ittihad – €60 million
The only Saudi signing on the list, Moussa Diaby is leaving the Premier League, where he excelled with Aston Villa last season. With 60 million euros (R$375 million) invested by Al-Ittihad, the Frenchman became the second most expensive player in the history of Saudi football, behind only Neymar.
6. Joao Neves – PSG – 59.92 million euros
In keeping with its new transfer policy, Paris Saint-Germain has invested its largest sum of money this summer in Portuguese star João Neves, formerly of Benfica. The club paid €59.92 million (R$374 million) for the midfielder, who also played for the Portuguese national team at Euro 2024.
7. Amadou Onana – Aston Villa – €59.35m
After losing Brazilian Douglas Luiz to Juventus, Aston Villa moved to reinforce the midfield. The team signed Everton midfielder Onana for 59.35 million euros (R$ 371 million). The 23-year-old played 30 games in the last edition of the Premier League and was a starter for Belgium in the last European Championship.
The 1.95m tall man scored on his debut for his new team, in the victory over West Ham.
8. Dani Olmo – Barcelona – €55 million
Despite the financial problems they are facing, Barcelona’s main signing for 2024/25 is among the most expensive of the window. Dani Olmo, who played for RB Leipzig for the last five seasons, joins Barça for €55 million (R$344 million), with a contract until June 2030. At 26 years of age, he was one of the standout players in Spain’s Euro 2024 title.
Having difficulty complying with LaLiga’s Financial Fair Play, Barcelona took a long time to register the player, who was left out of the first two rounds of the Spanish Championship. The midfielder made his debut in the third round, against Rayo Vallecano, last Tuesday.
9. Koopmeiners – Juventus – 54.70 million euros
With a major overhaul of the squad following the arrival of Thiago Motta, Juventus invested 54.70 million euros (R$342 million) in Dutch midfielder Koopmeiners, formerly of Atalanta, with a contract until June 2029. The athlete stood out with 15 goals and seven assists last season for the Europa League champions.
10. Michael Olise – Bayern Munich – €53 million
Bayern Munich are strengthening their squad in search of a return to winning ways after a season without any titles. The Bavarians’ main signing was Frenchman Michael Olise, formerly of Crystal Palace, who cost 53 million euros (R$331 million) and arrives with a contract until June 2029. The 22-year-old winger represented France at the Paris Olympics.
