Beyond his hockey career, Kmec comes from a Slovak family with strong connections to the sport. His older brother, Dušan Kmec, is also an ice hockey defenseman who has played competitively in Slovakia and Sweden.
Although Kmec has kept his parents’ names and romantic relationships largely private, he has spoken publicly about their support and revealed that his two given names honor his grandfathers, Jozef and Viliam.
Viliam Kmec’s Girlfriend: Is He Dating Anyone?
Viliam Kmec has not publicly confirmed the identity of a girlfriend or romantic partner through reliable, widely available sources.
Despite attracting increasing attention through his performances in North American hockey and with Slovakia’s national team, Kmec has generally maintained a private personal life.
His interviews with Slovak sports publications have primarily focused on his professional development, experiences in Canada and the United States, and ambitions to establish himself in the NHL.
There is no verified public announcement establishing whether Kmec is currently dating anyone.
Consequently, his relationship status remains unconfirmed, and it would be inaccurate to identify a particular person as his girlfriend without reliable evidence.

His official player biographies, NHL organization announcements and available interviews do not identify a wife or provide details about a wedding.

Kmec has generally preferred to discuss his hockey career rather than provide detailed information about his romantic relationships.
Viliam Kmec’s Children: Does He Have Any Kids?
There is no publicly verified information confirming that Viliam Kmec has children.
The Slovak defenseman has not made a widely documented announcement about becoming a father, and his official hockey biographies do not identify any sons or daughters.
Although he has spoken about his parents, brother and grandparents, he has not publicly established whether he has children of his own.
Therefore, the available information does not confirm whether Kmec is a father. The absence of a public announcement should not be interpreted as definitive proof that he does not have children.
Viliam Kmec’s Parents: Who Are His Father and Mother?
Viliam Kmec was born and raised in Košice, Slovakia, where his family supported his early interest in ice hockey.
Although the full names of his mother and father have not been reliably established in major public hockey sources, both parents have been mentioned in interviews about his childhood and professional career.
One particularly interesting detail about his family was revealed during the 2026 IIHF World Championship, when Kmec explained how his parents chose his two given names.
His full name, Jozef Viliam Kmec, honors both of his grandfathers.
Viliam Kmec’s Father
Viliam Kmec’s father has supported his son’s development from youth hockey in Slovakia to professional competition in North America.
While his father’s name and occupation have not been independently confirmed in reliable public sources, his involvement in family milestones is documented.
In May 2026, Kmec explained to Slovak sports publication Sportnet that his paternal grandfather was named Jozef.
His parents decided to give him two first names because they wanted to honor both sides of the family.
The name Jozef therefore came from his father’s side.
Kmec’s father also attended games during the 2026 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland, when his son represented Slovakia at the senior international level.
In a subsequent interview, the defenseman explained that his parents traveled to Switzerland to support him during games against Canada and the Czech Republic.
They were accompanied by other family members and friends, making the tournament an important occasion for the entire family.
Although Kmec had already played internationally at the junior level, the 2026 tournament represented another major achievement in his professional career.
Viliam Kmec’s Mother
Viliam Kmec’s mother has also played an important role in supporting his hockey development.
Although her name and occupation have not been reliably documented in the sources reviewed, Kmec shared an interesting story about her influence on his identity.
During an interview published by Sportnet on May 16, 2026, he explained that his maternal grandfather was named Viliam.
His parents chose to give him both names, Jozef and Viliam, but his mother preferred that people call him Vilo, a familiar Slovak nickname for Viliam.
The nickname became widely used during his childhood and eventually carried over into his hockey career.
As a result, the player is generally known as Viliam Kmec rather than by his complete name, Jozef Viliam Kmec.
His mother also supported him during his transition from Slovakia to Canadian junior hockey.
Moving abroad at a young age meant that Kmec had to adapt to living far from his family while developing greater independence.
In a 2026 interview about his time with the Prince George Cougars, Kmec acknowledged that the early stages of living overseas were difficult because he had never previously spent such a long period away from his relatives.
He eventually became more comfortable with the experience and developed strong connections with his teammates and the local community.
Viliam Kmec’s Grandparents: Why Does He Have Two First Names?
One of the most interesting details about Viliam Kmec’s family concerns the origin of his full name.
His maternal grandfather was named Viliam, while his paternal grandfather was named Jozef.
When he was born, his parents decided to honor both grandfathers rather than choose only one name.
Consequently, they registered him as Jozef Viliam Kmec.
The story was confirmed by Kmec himself during the 2026 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland.
Although his official documents contain both names, he is widely known in professional hockey simply as Viliam Kmec.
His mother preferred the nickname Vilo, which became the name used by relatives, friends and people connected to his hockey career.
The naming tradition demonstrates the family’s desire to maintain a connection between generations.

He played as a defenseman and progressed through the youth development system of HC Košice.
His performances eventually earned him opportunities to compete outside Slovakia.
During the 2015–16 season, Dušan moved to Sweden, where he joined the junior hockey program of Örebro HK.
The experience allowed him to compete against talented young players from different countries and adapt to a demanding training environment.
In an interview published by Sportnet on May 23, 2016, Dušan explained that Swedish hockey required considerable discipline and consistent effort during every practice session.
He acknowledged that the expectations were higher than those he had previously experienced.
His development in Sweden helped him earn a place on Slovakia’s national under-18 team.
Dušan represented Slovakia at the 2016 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in the United States.
Dušan Kmec’s Hockey Career
After developing through HC Košice and Örebro HK, Dušan continued playing competitive hockey in Slovakia and other European leagues.
His career included appearances in Slovak junior competitions and senior hockey.

Unlike Viliam, who signed an NHL contract with the Vegas Golden Knights organization, Dušan has not established a career in the NHL.
Nevertheless, both brothers share a connection to competitive hockey and their hometown of Košice.
Detailed information about Dušan’s current occupation outside hockey, marital status and children has not been widely documented.
How Dušan and Viliam Kmec Share a Hockey Connection
Dušan and Viliam followed similar early developmental paths through the HC Košice organization.
Both brothers became defensemen and pursued opportunities to improve their skills outside Slovakia.
Dušan traveled to Sweden during his teenage years, while Viliam later moved to Canada to compete in the Western Hockey League.
Their careers demonstrate the family’s connection to ice hockey across different generations of youth development.
Although both brothers have participated in competitive hockey, reliable public interviews do not establish the exact extent to which Dušan personally coached or influenced Viliam’s early development.

According to Kmec, the celebrations were so loud that neighbors reportedly complained about the noise.
His parents, brother, godfather and several friends subsequently traveled to Switzerland to watch him play.
The family attended matches against Canada and the Czech Republic.
Kmec described having his relatives in the stands as an especially enjoyable experience, particularly because he was representing his country at the senior level.
Those moments highlighted the importance of family support as his career continued developing outside Slovakia.

In 2021, the Prince George Cougars selected Kmec in the second round of the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.

Despite his progress, he was not selected in the NHL Entry Draft.
Instead of abandoning his ambitions, he continued improving his skating, defensive abilities and offensive contributions.
