The family previously lived in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, a village located south of Dublin.
When Whelan was approximately 13 years old, Anne Marie received a professional opportunity in California.

During a September 2023 Irish Times interview, kicking coach Geno Perez emphasized the importance of Whelan’s family support.
He explained that Anne Marie had contributed considerable time and financial resources to help Daniel pursue professional football.
Her encouragement also helped him overcome setbacks and maintain his determination.

Whelan was attempting to earn the Green Bay Packers’ starting punter position after joining the franchise as a free agent.
In addition to punting, he needed to improve his technique as a holder for field-goal and extra-point attempts.
To practise, Daniel asked his mother to help simulate long snaps at their home in California.
According to the Green Bay Packers, Anne Marie tossed footballs toward him in the family kitchen while he worked on catching and positioning the ball.
The unusual training arrangement allowed him to practise an important special-teams responsibility away from team facilities.
