Phillip Wheeler’s Family: Girlfriend, Children, Parents and Siblings

Last Updated on October 5, 2026 by Candida Lucia

Phillip Wheeler’s basketball journey has taken him from New Jersey high school basketball to professional leagues around the world, the Puerto Rico national team and eventually the NBA. Born in Rumson, New Jersey, Wheeler comes from a family with particularly strong ties to the Long Branch area and a notable basketball history on his father’s side.

Unlike many NBA players, Wheeler has shared very little publicly about his immediate family. Available records provide some information about his father and paternal relatives, including a connection to former NBA player Clinton Wheeler, but the identities of his mother and any siblings have not been clearly documented by authoritative basketball sources. He is similarly private about his dating life. Here is what is publicly known about Phillip Wheeler’s girlfriend, children, parents and siblings.

Who Is Phillip Wheeler’s Girlfriend?

Phillip Wheeler does not have a publicly confirmed girlfriend as of now.

Wheeler has kept his romantic life almost completely outside the public spotlight. Interviews and profiles throughout his career have concentrated primarily on basketball, his unusual decision to turn professional as a teenager and his connection to Puerto Rico.

No reliable NBA, FIBA or established sports publication currently identifies a girlfriend or romantic partner for Wheeler.

This does not necessarily mean Wheeler is single. He may simply prefer to keep relationships private. Without confirmation from Wheeler himself or credible reporting, it would be inappropriate to identify someone as his girlfriend based on social-media speculation.

Is Phillip Wheeler Married?

There is no reliable public confirmation that Phillip Wheeler is married.

Wheeler has not announced a marriage, and official NBA and FIBA player information does not identify a wife or spouse.

Does Phillip Wheeler Have Children?

There are no publicly confirmed reports that Phillip Wheeler has children.

The basketball player has not publicly announced becoming a father, and reliable profiles of his career do not identify him as having a son or daughter.

As of now, the publicly documented side of Wheeler’s family story primarily concerns his father and paternal relatives in New Jersey.

Who Are Phillip Wheeler’s Parents?

Public reporting about Phillip Wheeler’s parents remains unusually limited.

Reliable local records strongly indicate that his father is Phillip Wheeler III, who has also been referred to locally as “Big Phil.” Wheeler’s mother has supported his basketball journey as well, but her name has not been consistently established by authoritative public sources.

Because several unrelated people share the Wheeler surname, family information found on unsourced biography websites should be treated cautiously.

Phillip Wheeler’s Father: Phillip Wheeler III

Phillip Wheeler III is publicly indicated to be Phillip Wheeler’s father.

The family connection can be traced through the obituary of Wheeler’s paternal grandfather, Phillip Wheeler Jr. The obituary identifies Phillip Wheeler III as one of his sons and also names a grandson, Phillip “PJ” Wheeler, whose basketball games the elder Wheeler regularly attended.

Local reporting surrounding the younger Phillip Wheeler’s 2025 NBA breakthrough also referred to his father as “Big Phil” and described the elder Wheeler as having his own basketball background in Long Branch.

The father-son basketball connection therefore extends Wheeler’s sporting story beyond his own career.

Phillip Wheeler’s Father and Long Branch Basketball

Phillip Wheeler’s paternal family has deep roots in Long Branch, New Jersey.

Community accounts describe his father as a talented basketball player during his own youth and recall him participating in basketball activities associated with Long Branch High School.

That background gave the younger Wheeler an immediate connection to basketball before he emerged as a major high school prospect himself.

The family’s basketball history becomes even more notable through Phillip’s great-uncle, Clinton Wheeler, who reached the NBA decades before him.

Who Is Phillip Wheeler’s Mother?

Phillip Wheeler’s mother has remained extremely private, and her name has not been reliably documented by major public basketball sources.

Her involvement in her son’s career is nevertheless documented.

In August 2019, when the teenage Wheeler decided to leave American high school basketball and become a professional player in Italy, reporting stated that his mother informed his prospective new school that he would instead be moving overseas.

Because Wheeler was only 17 at the time, the decision represented a major step for the entire family.

Wheeler later described the move to professional basketball as an important decision for both himself and his family.

Who Was Phillip Wheeler’s Grandfather?

Phillip Wheeler Jr. was Phillip Wheeler’s paternal grandfather.

He was born in 1957 and spent much of his life in Long Branch, New Jersey.

Phillip Wheeler Jr. worked at Monmouth Medical Center for more than four decades, eventually becoming an assistant security director.

Basketball was also an important part of his family life. His obituary specifically recalled how much he enjoyed attending his grandson Phillip “PJ” Wheeler’s basketball games.

He frequently attended those games with his brother Clinton, and the two were remembered as particularly enthusiastic supporters from the stands.

Phillip Wheeler Jr. died in September 2020, while his grandson was still in the early stages of his professional basketball career.

Is Phillip Wheeler Related to Former NBA Player Clinton Wheeler?

Yes. Phillip Wheeler is related to former NBA guard Clinton Wheeler through his paternal family.

Clinton Wheeler was the brother of Phillip’s grandfather, Phillip Wheeler Jr., making Clinton Phillip Wheeler’s great-uncle.

That gives the current professional forward a particularly interesting family connection to NBA history.

Who Was Clinton Wheeler?

Clinton Wheeler was born in 1959 and became an outstanding basketball player at Long Branch High School.

He helped Long Branch complete an undefeated 30-0 season and win a state championship in 1977.

Clinton later played college basketball at William Paterson University before beginning a lengthy professional career.

He reached the NBA during the 1987-88 season and eventually appeared for the Indiana Pacers, Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers.

Clinton played 87 regular-season NBA games across two seasons before continuing his career in other professional leagues.

He remained closely connected to the Long Branch community and, according to his brother’s obituary, regularly attended young Phillip Wheeler’s basketball games before his death in February 2019.

Does Phillip Wheeler Have Siblings?

Phillip Wheeler’s siblings have not been clearly identified by authoritative public sources.

Family records list several grandchildren belonging to Phillip Wheeler Jr.’s extended family, including names such as Tieona Wheeler and Daiseyanna Wheeler. However, those records do not establish clearly enough which grandchildren share the same parents.

For that reason, it would be speculative to identify those relatives as Phillip Wheeler’s sisters or brothers without stronger evidence.

Until Wheeler or an authoritative biography provides additional information, the number and identities of his siblings should be considered private or unconfirmed.

Phillip Wheeler’s Puerto Rican Family Heritage

Although Wheeler was born and raised in New Jersey, he also has Puerto Rican ancestry.

Puerto Rican reporting has confirmed that one of Wheeler’s grandparents was born in Puerto Rico.

That family connection allowed him to represent Puerto Rico internationally.

FIBA officially lists Wheeler as a Puerto Rico national-team player, and he has represented the island at both youth and senior levels.

His relationship with Puerto Rico has become a significant part of his basketball identity even though he did not grow up on the island.

Phillip Wheeler Representing Puerto Rico

Wheeler first represented Puerto Rico at the 2018 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup.

Puerto Rico produced an excellent tournament and won the bronze medal.

Wheeler later represented the country at the 2021 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup, where he took on a much larger role and averaged 15.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

He subsequently progressed to the senior Puerto Rico national team and participated in FIBA Basketball World Cup and AmeriCup qualifying games.

Wheeler has spoken positively about feeling connected to Puerto Rico and has also spent several seasons competing in the island’s Baloncesto Superior Nacional league.

Phillip Wheeler’s Childhood in New Jersey

Phillip Wheeler was born on April 23, 2002, in Rumson, New Jersey.

He began his high school career at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School.

Wheeler quickly established himself as a talented wing before transferring to the Ranney School in Tinton Falls.

At Ranney, he joined a loaded team that included future professional players Scottie Lewis and Bryan Antoine.

During the 2018-19 season, Wheeler helped Ranney win the school’s first New Jersey Tournament of Champions title.

His athleticism and scoring ability attracted recruiting interest from college programs including Seton Hall, Providence and St. John’s.

Why Phillip Wheeler Turned Professional as a Teenager

Wheeler ultimately chose a route very different from most American basketball prospects.

Instead of completing his senior season and entering NCAA basketball, Wheeler decided in 2019 to leave high school basketball and join Stella Azzurra Basketball Academy in Rome, Italy.

He was only 17 years old.

The professional contract made him ineligible for NCAA basketball, but Wheeler believed beginning his professional development immediately gave him the best opportunity to eventually reach the NBA.

His parents supported the move despite the enormous adjustment involved in sending a teenager overseas.

Wheeler later acknowledged that living independently in another country required significant adaptation.

Phillip Wheeler’s Professional Basketball Journey

After beginning his professional journey overseas, Wheeler continued building experience through several leagues.

He spent substantial time in Puerto Rico and also entered the NBA G League.

His G League journey included opportunities with organizations such as the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Iowa Wolves, Mexico City Capitanes, Texas Legends, Maine Celtics and Osceola Magic.

That route required several years of persistence before Wheeler finally received an NBA opportunity.

Phillip Wheeler Reaches the NBA

Wheeler’s NBA dream became reality in March 2025.

The Philadelphia 76ers signed him to a 10-day contract on March 26, 2025.

He made his NBA debut that same night against the Washington Wizards and recorded four points, four rebounds and two assists in approximately 15 minutes.

Wheeler ultimately appeared in five NBA games for Philadelphia during the 2024-25 season.

The achievement carried additional significance given the generations of basketball history in his paternal family, including his great-uncle Clinton’s NBA career decades earlier.

Phillip Wheeler Joins the Phoenix Suns

After continuing his career with the Osceola Magic, Puerto Rico’s Piratas de Quebradillas and NBA G League United, Wheeler received another NBA opportunity in September 2026.

The Phoenix Suns signed Wheeler to a training-camp contract on September 25, 2026.

NBA.com currently lists the 6-foot-8 forward on Phoenix’s roster as he competes for a place with the team during training camp and preseason.

Wheeler entered camp shortly after a strong performance at the 2026 FIBA Intercontinental Cup, where he averaged 13.8 points and 4.3 rebounds for NBA G League United.
