The £62.5m star defends his former boss and reveals why Manchester United’s recent success belongs to both managers.
Despite Manchester United’s explosive form under interim boss Michael Carrick, Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha has urged fans and pundits not to airbrush Ruben Amorim’s contribution from the club’s recent success.
Since Carrick took the reins, United have surged into fourth place with four wins in five games. However, Cunha who joined United from Wolves in a £62.5m deal last summer insists that the foundations for this resurgence were laid by the man who brought him to Old Trafford.
“I’m Very Grateful”: The Amorim Legacy
Speaking to DAZN, Cunha was quick to credit Amorim for the club’s current trajectory, despite the Portuguese manager’s dismissal following a tense standoff with the board.
“I’ve always been very grateful for everything Ruben did,” Cunha stated. “Many new players came because of him, so I think he also plays a big part in the success we are having now. It’s very easy to see the past as only problems when things change, but it’s the opposite.”
Tactical Myth-Busting
Cunha, who has been in clinical form with goals against Arsenal and Fulham, also downplayed the narrative that Carrick has completely reinvented United’s tactical wheel. He suggests the transition from Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 to Carrick’s system is less drastic than it appears.
“The numbers in football are very misleading,” Cunha explained. “We focus too much on the negative. We still attack in various ways and end up defending with the formation that everyone says is Ruben’s.”
The Carrick Case: Rooney Weighs In
While Cunha defends the past, the pressure to make Carrick’s appointment permanent is mounting. United legend Wayne Rooney has officially backed his former teammate for the full-time role, citing Carrick’s “calming influence” as the missing ingredient in previous regimes.
“We’ve tried Mourinho, Van Gaal, Ten Hag, and Amorim for me, Carrick makes sense,” Rooney told The Overlap. “He knows the club, he cares for the club, and he is managing the whole squad well.”
Top 4 Race: The Road to Everton
United currently sit in fourth place, clinging to a one-point lead over Chelsea. After a rare extended break following Benjamin Sesko’s late equalizer against West Ham, the Red Devils travel to Goodison Park on Monday. A victory against Everton would further cement Carrick’s status as the frontrunner for the permanent job this summer.
