Jose Mourinho’s Benfica are reportedly eyeing a late swoop for Chelsea’s teenage sensation Tyrique George, but the Blues’ hefty price tag could derail the move before the deadline.

Mourinho Eyes Chelsea Talent

As the winter transfer window enters its final hours, Benfica have identified Chelsea’s Tyrique George as a priority target to bolster their attacking options. According to reports from Record, the Portuguese giants explored a loan deal with an obligation to buy a strategy aimed at navigating January budget constraints.

However, Chelsea’s stance has remained firm. The London club is reportedly demanding a fee of €25 million (£21m) to part ways with the 19-year-old winger. For Benfica president Rui Costa, these demands are currently considered “prohibitive” for a mid-season reinforcement.

Why Tyrique George is in High Demand

The young England U21 international has enjoyed a breakout 2025/26 campaign at Stamford Bridge. Known for his tactical maturity and versatility, George has proven he can excel both on the flanks and in central creative roles.

Season Stats so far:

  • Appearances: 11
  • Goals: 3
  • Assists: 1
  • Style: A modern, explosive winger with elite dribbling and vision—qualities that have specifically impressed Jose Mourinho.

Competition from Serie A

Benfica aren’t the only club at the table. Italian giants Napoli and AS Roma are also reportedly monitoring George’s situation. This multi-club interest has allowed Chelsea to maintain their high valuation, refusing to budge on the €25m price tag that has already seen previous bids from other European clubs rejected.

The Verdict: A Distant Dream?

With the clock ticking toward the deadline, Benfica are expected to step back unless Chelsea lowers their demands. While Mourinho is keen to add George’s “X-factor” to the squad at Seixal, the Eagles are wary of jeopardizing their financial stability for a single prospect.
