Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are doubling down on their Welsh fairytale, injecting a fresh £47 million into Wrexham AFC as the club sights a historic promotion to the Premier League.

The “Hollywood owners” have now authorized a massive capital boost aimed at infrastructure and high-level recruitment. Currently sitting 6th in the Championship, Wrexham is on the verge of a fourth consecutive promotion a feat that would take the club from the 5th tier to the pinnacle of world football in just six years.

From National League to the Championship Play-offs

Since taking over the club in 2020 for just £2 million, Reynolds and McElhenney have transformed Wrexham into a global phenomenon. After an initial investment of £30 million earlier this season, the club faced a slow start but has since surged under the leadership of Phil Parkinson.

  • New Investment: £47 million (Infrastructure & Transfers).
  • Current Standing: 6th in the Championship (Play-off zone).
  • Recent Milestone: Eliminated Premier League side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.

The “Mythic Quest” Origin Story

The interest in Wrexham began on the set of the series Mythic Quest, where Rob McElhenney met writer and Liverpool superfan Humphrey Kerr. Intrigued by the passion of British football, McElhenney researched clubs with untapped potential and fell in love with Wrexham’s loyal fanbase which averaged 4,500 attendees even while in the 5th division.

McElhenney convinced Ryan Reynolds to join the project, and the rest is sporting history. Today, the club sells out the STōK Cae Ras every week and boasts a commercial reach that rivals many top-flight teams.

The Road to the Premier League

With the top two teams in the Championship gaining automatic promotion and 3rd to 6th entering the high-stakes play-offs, Wrexham’s new £47m war chest could be the decisive factor in the final stretch of the season. If successful, the Red Dragons would complete one of the greatest ascents in the history of the English game.
