The Chelsea boss admits James struggled with form in December but confirms the forward is nearing her ‘elite level’ ahead of the FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has detailed the careful management behind Lauren James’ return to peak fitness following her recent injury layoff. The England international was the standout performer in the Blues’ dominant 5-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday, marking Chelsea’s first appearance of 2026 with a clinical goal.

The Recovery Process James, a focal point of Bompastor’s tactical system at Kingsmeadow, made her initial return to the squad in late December. However, the French manager admitted that the forward was far from her best during those first few appearances.

“In December, we had Lauren back in the team, but she wasn’t in her best physical shape,” Bompastor explained. “Part of the process was for her to earn minutes in competitive games to regain that match sharpness. She knew she wasn’t at her top level yet, and so did we.”

Back to Best Form The patience shown by the coaching staff seems to have paid off. James looked sharp and explosive against the Hammers, showing the “difference-maker” quality that Chelsea fans have come to expect.

“Now she is back to a much better level of physical conditioning. I think you could see the difference in today’s game,” Bompastor added, highlighting James’ improved movement and work rate.
