Manuel Ugarte has agreed in principle to leave Manchester United and join Ajax, but the midfielder’s departure still depends on approval from the English club. Unhappy with his situation at Old Trafford, the Uruguayan has given the green light to the Dutch giants as he looks for a fresh start in the second half of the European season.
Ajax target Ugarte on loan
According to Voetbal International, Ajax are keen to capitalize on Ugarte’s lack of form and limited opportunities at Manchester United. However, the four-time Champions League winners are unable to finance a permanent transfer and are instead exploring a loan deal to strengthen the squad under interim coach Fred Grim.
Negotiations are expected to be complex. Ugarte’s salary is well above Ajax’s current wage structure, and the Amsterdam club face competition from financially stronger teams across Europe. Convincing Manchester United to sanction the move also remains a major hurdle.
Growing interest across Europe
Ugarte has struggled to settle since his move to Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain. Although he was given early chances, the midfielder failed to fully convince both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, prompting several clubs to monitor his situation closely.
Interest in the Uruguayan dates back to before the start of the season and has intensified in recent months. Napoli, Lyon, and Nice have all been linked with potential moves, while Galatasaray came closest to securing an agreement.
The Turkish club reportedly contacted Manchester United with a loan proposal that included a €20 million purchase option (around R$125 million). According to CaughtOffside, the offer was formally submitted and received a response from the Premier League side.
Manchester United stance could change
Despite the mounting interest, Ugarte was not initially expected to leave during the January transfer window. TEAMtalk reports that Manchester United director Jason Wilcox recently met with the player’s representatives and indicated that a mid-season exit was not part of the club’s plans.
However, the situation at Old Trafford has shifted following the recent dismissal of Ruben Amorim. Squad dynamics and priorities are being reassessed, with players such as Kobbie Mainoo now expected to have a clearer role. This change could open the door for Ugarte’s departure if United decide to reshape their midfield.
