Jude Bellingham has stepped forward as one of Real Madrid’s leaders ahead of the first Madrid derby of 2026, as the club prepares to face Atlético de Madrid this Thursday (8) in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final without Kylian Mbappé.
The French star is sidelined with injury and will miss the highly anticipated clash, leaving a significant gap in Real Madrid’s attacking structure.
Bellingham Addresses Mbappé’s Absence
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday (7), Bellingham acknowledged Mbappé’s importance and made it clear that the responsibility must now be shared among the attacking players.
“It’s up to players like me, Vini, Rodrygo and Gonzalo to step up in the absence of Kylian’s enormous influence. We have to do that not just with goals, but with our game in all areas,” the England international said.
The midfielder emphasized collective effort over individual numbers, highlighting the need for intensity, creativity, and leadership across the pitch.
Responding to Criticism and Changing Role
Bellingham was also asked about the criticism he has faced during the 2025 season, particularly regarding his goal output compared to his explosive debut year at the club.
According to the player, expectations rose naturally after his first season one that coincided with Mbappé playing a more limited role.
“I understand the pressure. But the role Xabi gave me is more complete. I’m enjoying it more, to be honest, because I’m involved in every phase of the game,” Bellingham explained.
Under Xabi Alonso, Bellingham has taken on deeper responsibilities, contributing to buildup play, pressing, and defensive transitions, rather than focusing solely on goals.

With Mbappé absent, all eyes will be on Bellingham to dictate tempo, lead transitions, and once again rise in a decisive moment for Real Madrid.
