Paris Saint-Germain could be heading towards a major change on the touchline in the coming years. According to reports, head coach Luis Enrique has decided not to renew his contract with the French giants and plans to leave the club once his current deal expires.
PSG are currently enjoying the most successful period in their history. The Parisian side have dominated French football for years and, at the end of 2025, finally lifted the long-awaited Champions League trophy. They also defeated Flamengo to secure the Intercontinental title, cementing their place among the world’s elite.
While stars such as Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha have been key figures on the pitch, many credit Luis Enrique as the main architect behind PSG’s historic success. However, his time in Paris may be drawing to a close in the medium term.
Luis Enrique expected to leave PSG in 2027
On Tuesday (January 6), German newspaper BILD reported that Luis Enrique has made the decision not to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. As things stand, the Spanish coach is expected to remain at the club only until June 2027, when his current deal expires.
According to the report, the decision is driven primarily by Enrique’s desire to take on a new professional challenge after a highly successful spell in the French capital.
Speculation grows over potential Barcelona return
The report has also reignited speculation about a possible return to Barcelona. In recent months, rumors have linked Luis Enrique with a comeback to the Catalan club, where he previously enjoyed great success as both a player and a manager.
Adding to the intrigue, the contract of Barcelona’s current coach, Hansi Flick, is set to expire in June next year — the same period in which Luis Enrique is expected to leave PSG. Despite the timing, there is currently no concrete evidence of talks or formal interest between Barcelona and the Spanish coach.
For now, Luis Enrique remains fully focused on his work in Paris. During the 2025–26 season so far, he has led PSG in 26 matches, recording 17 wins. Under his guidance, the team has scored 63 goals and conceded just 26, underlining their dominance both domestically and in Europe.
PSG consider extraordinary offer to keep Luis Enrique
Despite reports of his intention to leave, PSG’s board are not ready to give up easily. According to Spanish outlet AS, the club is considering an unprecedented move by offering Luis Enrique a so-called “lifetime contract”.
Such an agreement would be highly unusual in modern European football and would effectively allow the coach to decide when he wants to step away from the club. The idea has already sparked debate among PSG supporters and within the French and European media.
