Carvajal reveals that Xabi Alonso was a key player in Dani Ceballos’s stay at Real Madrid

Dani Ceballos came close to leaving Real Madrid this summer, with Olympique de Marseille pushing hard for his signature. However, the midfielder ultimately rejected the Ligue 1 club’s advances and according to captain Dani Carvajal, coach Xabi Alonso played a decisive role in convincing him to stay.
Marseille Move Collapsed at Final Hour
Negotiations between Marseille and Real Madrid had advanced, and Ceballos was reportedly enthusiastic about the idea of playing in France. But in the final hours of the transfer window, the Spaniard changed his mind and decided to remain at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Xabi Alonso’s Intervention
Speaking this week, Carvajal revealed the turning point in the saga.
“Ceballos? It looked like he was going to Marseille, but the deal fell through. Xabi spoke to him and asked him to stay, that he would count on him, and that the season is very long,” Carvajal explained.
The right-back also praised his teammate’s qualities: “Dani brings us something different. He likes to have the ball, gives us calm, and doesn’t lose it. He’s unique in our midfield, and the coach knows that.”
Future Still Unclear
Ceballos, 28, is under contract with Real Madrid until June 2026. So far, there have been no signs of an early renewal, leaving questions about his long-term role at the club despite Alonso’s backing.
