German goalkeeper’s relationship with the club faces new turbulence despite captaincy return

Barcelona’s relationship with Marc-André ter Stegen has hit another rocky patch. Despite recently regaining the captain’s armband, the German goalkeeper angered the club by signing a Players’ Association statement opposing La Liga’s decision to move the Villarreal–Barcelona match to Miami.

Why Ter Stegen’s Move Upset the Club

According to RAC1, Barça’s board felt blindsided by ter Stegen’s signature, arguing it went against the club’s interests. The controversy has stirred debate across La Liga, as moving the fixture abroad denies Villarreal their home match at La Cerámica this season.

Critics argue the move disrupts the competition’s integrity. The Spanish Footballers’ Association stated:

“It’s disrespectful to the players when it involves changes at the sporting level and the displacement of workers outside the national territory within the framework of a national league. We are united. We want respect and transparency.”

Barcelona Betting on Joan García

The tension comes as Barcelona prepares for the future by bringing in goalkeeper Joan García, signaling that the club is already considering life beyond ter Stegen. The 33-year-old’s position is no longer untouchable despite his leadership role.

Other Goalkeeper Decisions Pending

Barça also faces a decision on Iñaki Peña, who is being monitored by Girona, Celta Vigo, and Italian club Como. His potential departure would further shake up Barcelona’s goalkeeping department.
